Tŷ Newydd

A contemporary new dwelling for a local fisherman and his family

Replacing a dilapidated old house that was once part of a smallholding on the approach to the picturesque village of Aberdaron

Set back slightly from the main road, several siting options and massing studies were explored to help achieve a design that both fitted into the existing street pattern of run-of-the-mill bungalows and newbuilds on either side, whilst at the same time defying convention with an unusual modern frontage and composition in crisp white silicone render and zinc clad dormers.

Behind this 2 storey public frontage onto the main road, is a single storey wing containing the main living space which extends out towards open fields to the rear, forming a hidden courtyard and garden space. This creates a seamless link between the interior and the outside space, bringing the outside in, and providing a panoramic view from Rhiw headland all the way to the islands off Aberdaron beach.

Visual impact

The new dwelling is highly insulated and is fitted with triple glazed composite wood/aluminium windows and doors, renewable energy in the form of an air-source-heat-pump, which works with underfloor heating throughout.

A polished concrete floor and large areas of glazing around the rear courtyard helps to create a very bright but tranquil interior, adding to the contemporary but understated feel of the architecture.
