Enjoying dramatic views down a hidden valley and over Cardigan Bay, this 5 bedroom newbuild dwelling replaces an extended 19C built cottage that was destroyed by fire.
Given the landscape sensitivity of the site on an elevated plateau cut into a south facing slope, the proposal for an enlarged modern dwelling had to be sympathetically designed and carefully sited to minimise the visual impact in comparison with the original cottage that was traditional in character.
A striking barn-like white rendered form nestling in a dramatic backdrop of green fields and hedges
The design combines the aesthetics of local Welsh vernacular building forms typical of the Llŷn Peninsula such as whitewashed stone cottages and agricultural outbuildings clad in metal, with modern elements such as an open plan ground floor with large areas of glazing, contemporary details and materials.
Projecting from the front elevation is a single storey gabled element finished in a contrasting zinc metal cladding, which echoes the metal clad agricultural sheds native to this landscape. This provides very focused views of the landscape beyond from the main living space, and separates a large outdoor terrace facing towards Hells Mouth to the left whilst also providing shelter and definition to the main entrance and driveway on the right.
