From vacant garage to vibrant harbourfront workspace and gym
This retrofit project involved transforming a former car tyre and service garage into a vibrant mixed use building incorporating a gym on the ground floor and offices on the above.
Having been vacant for several years, this dilapidated building clad in asbestos sheets had become an eyesore on what is a highly visible and prominent site in Pwllheli, sandwiched between the waterfront and the railway. The challenge was how to transform a basic shed and give it a new lease of life and modern and attractive character that reflects its new mixed use, worthy of its location and the views over the harbour.

Upgraded fabric, waterfront views, and renewed night-time presence
Working within a tight budget, the steel frame was repaired and reinforced, and the fabric refurbished and upgraded with new steel roofing and cladding, and insulated render to the masonry lower half. The glass curtain wall to the upper floor opens the building up and provides views over the waterfront.
Panels of obscure glass blocks to the ground floor elevation introduce daylight into the new gym space without compromising privacy, whilst at nightime helping to animate the streetscape with light from this 24hr gym.
