Creating a modern multi-purpose community facility, on a relatively modest budget and tight programme
With a combination of National Lottery and Welsh Government grant funding, this former primary school in the village of Y Fron has been transformed into a vibrant new community centre, with cafe and community shop, changing rooms and an 16-bed bunkhouse.
The challenge for Dobson Owen and the client was to introduce several new uses into this redundant Victorian school building by remodelling and extending it.

The outcome
As part of the transformation into a more attractive, unified and energy efficient building, the envelope was wrapped in insulated render, new windows and was completely re-roofed. It is now powered entirely by renewable energy from air-source heat pumps, alongside an 8kW solar array on the roof.
