A former mill located next to a tributary of the river Soch was now in a poor condition and badly in need of modernisation and refurbishment
A large wrap-around extension has been designed and added to the side and rear of the old mill, which had to be carefully sited so as to avoid the risk of flooding given the proximity to the nearby stream.
The existing slate roofs were completely replaced, and integrated solar panels installed, along with an air-source-heat-pump.
Visual impact
Locally sourced Welsh larch cladding was used on the extension walls, which has been charred using the Japanese ‘shou sugi ban’ technique which both increases the lifespan of the wood significantly but also adds a black patina which produces a dramatic architectural effect.
Although the outline and shape of the extensions are relatively traditional, the material expression and detailing are contemporary, ensuring that there is both a clear distinction but also harmony between new and old.
