Caffi Gwynant

Formerly Capel Bethania

Creating a welcoming hub for walkers and the local community in a sensitively restored historic chapel

This former Grade II listed chapel Capel Bethania, was bought by the community and converted into a cafe, which is now very popular with visitor starting or finishing the Watkin Path ascent of Snowdon. The ornate chapel interior was sensitively restored to create Caffi Gwynant, whilst retaining and repurposing original features such as the pulpit and the sêt-fawr. A dramatic fan-shaped glass canopy was added onto the side of the building to provide shelter for an outdoor seating area.

The outcome

This sensitive conversion not only honours the building’s historical character, but also supports the community and seasonal visitors. The café thrives as both a social destination and a gateway to the mountains, seamlessly connecting heritage and hospitality at the heart of Snowdonia.
